A striking green comet has been photographed sweeping across the dark skies of Namibia, offering an unusually detailed view of one of the solar system’s periodic visitors. Comet 220P/McNaught, which recently underwent dramatic increases in brightness, was captured by astrophotographers Gerald Rhemann and Michael Jäger.
Comet 220P/McNaught Shines Over Namibia
The photograph shows 220P/McNaught glowing vividly against the night sky above Namibia, where clear conditions and low levels of light pollution provide favourable opportunities for astronomical photography.
The comet was discovered by Australian astronomer Robert H. McNaught and completes an orbit around the sun approximately once every 5.5 years.
In June, 220P/McNaught reached perihelion, the point in its orbit where it comes closest to the sun. Around that time, the comet experienced a major outburst that increased its brightness by about 8,000 times.
Another Surge in Brightness During August
The comet became significantly brighter again in August, reaching roughly 600 times its normal brightness.
It was during this period that Rhemann and Jäger photographed the object over Namibia on August 8. The pair used a 12-inch Astrograph telescope equipped with a ZWO ASI 6200 MM Pro camera to record the detailed image.
The resulting photograph clearly shows the comet’s distinctive green appearance and structure, features that can be difficult to observe without specialised astronomical equipment.
Why Comet Sightings Can Be Difficult
Although comets regularly travel through the solar system, seeing one clearly from Earth is relatively uncommon for casual skywatchers. Many are too faint or distant to be observed with the naked eye and require telescopes or sensitive cameras.
The clarity of the Namibia image therefore makes the observation particularly notable. Dark skies and appropriate equipment allowed the photographers to record details that would be difficult to detect from heavily illuminated urban areas.
For New Zealand stargazers, similar observations often depend on location, weather and the position of the object in the southern sky. Remote areas across Aotearoa, particularly those with limited artificial lighting, are well suited to astronomy when celestial events are visible from the Southern Hemisphere.
Comets Also Produce Meteor Showers
Even when a comet itself cannot easily be seen, material left behind during its journey can create another familiar astronomical spectacle: meteor showers.
As comets travel around the sun, they release dust and small fragments along their orbital paths. When Earth passes through these debris streams, particles enter the atmosphere at high speed and burn up, producing the bright streaks commonly known as shooting stars.
Perseid Meteor Shower Reaches Its Annual Peak
The Perseid meteor shower is currently making its annual appearance. It originates from debris associated with comet Swift-Tuttle.
Under favourable dark-sky conditions, observers can potentially see up to 100 meteors during periods of strong Perseid activity. However, visibility varies considerably according to cloud cover, moonlight, local light pollution and an observer’s geographic location.
The Perseids are particularly well known in the Northern Hemisphere, where the radiant point rises higher in the sky. For observers in New Zealand, the shower is generally less favourable because of its northerly position, highlighting how dramatically viewing conditions for astronomical events can differ between hemispheres.
A Rarely Seen View of a Periodic Visitor
The Namibia photograph provides an unusually clear glimpse of 220P/McNaught during a period of heightened activity. Its dramatic brightening and distinctive green glow have turned an otherwise difficult-to-see periodic comet into a remarkable target for astrophotographers.
While most people will rarely see a comet with this level of detail directly through a telescope, images such as this offer a vivid reminder of the constantly changing objects travelling through the solar system.
