NASA has abandoned an attempt to save the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory after technical problems affected the spacecraft sent to raise the ageing telescope’s orbit. The decision leaves Swift on course to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere, potentially by the end of 2026.
Technical problems end Swift Observatory rescue mission
Earlier this year, NASA revealed that the Swift Observatory was losing altitude considerably faster than expected.
Swift had maintained a relatively stable low-Earth orbit for more than two decades. However, unusually strong solar activity during 2024 increased atmospheric drag and accelerated the telescope’s orbital decline.
NASA estimated that without intervention, Swift could burn up in Earth’s atmosphere by the end of 2026.
The agency subsequently backed a commercial rescue mission led by United States company Katalyst Space Technologies. The plan involved sending another spacecraft to rendezvous with Swift and boost it into a higher, more stable orbit.
The rescue spacecraft launched successfully on 3 July. However, persistent problems with its manoeuvring thrusters emerged during the following month, preventing the mission from proceeding as planned.
NASA and Katalyst have now ended the operation.
“This is not the outcome we were working toward, but it does not change why this mission was worth attempting,” NASA administrator Jared Isaacman said in a 19 August statement. “The team moved with extraordinary speed to give Swift a chance to carry out more science while advancing capabilities America will need for satellite servicing in the future.”
Mission tested future satellite-servicing technology
Although the effort failed to save Swift, NASA said the operation could still contribute to the development of technologies needed to service satellites in orbit.
Satellite-servicing missions are regarded as increasingly important as governments and commercial operators look for ways to repair, refuel or reposition spacecraft rather than replacing them.
Such capabilities could extend the operating lives of valuable observatories and reduce the amount of space debris accumulating around Earth.
Swift transformed the study of gamma-ray bursts
Launched in 2004, Swift was designed primarily to detect gamma-ray bursts — brief but extraordinarily powerful explosions produced by some of the most energetic events in the universe.
The observatory can identify these unpredictable events and rapidly turn towards them, allowing its instruments to study both the initial burst and its aftermath across several wavelengths.
Its science operations are managed from a modest facility near Pennsylvania State University in State College, with Pennsylvania’s Allegheny Mountains nearby.
During 21 years of observations, Swift developed into an important tool for multiwavelength astronomy. Its rapid-response capability allowed scientists to examine short-lived events that could otherwise have disappeared before other telescopes were able to observe them.
Observatory studied black holes and exploding stars
Swift’s research ultimately extended well beyond gamma-ray bursts.
The telescope has studied active galactic nuclei at the centres of distant galaxies, supernovae across the universe and black holes consuming surrounding matter. It has also contributed observations of brown dwarfs and interstellar objects travelling through the Solar System.
Data from Swift have supported astronomers around the world, including researchers examining how stars die, how black holes grow and how extreme cosmic explosions develop.
With the rescue mission now over, NASA has not announced another attempt to raise the observatory’s orbit. Swift is expected to continue collecting scientific data for as long as its orbital conditions and spacecraft systems allow.
Despite the unsuccessful intervention, Swift’s more than two decades of discoveries have secured its place as one of NASA’s most productive space-based observatories. Its remaining operational life will depend on the rate of orbital decay and future solar activity.
