A new group of Cuban doctors, graduates and health technicians arrived in Gambia on Sunday to join the Caribbean island's medical brigade that has been treating and saving lives in the sister African nation for 28 years, according to a memo sent to this editorial team. .

Professionals from the largest Antilles will provide assistance in various hospitals throughout the territory of The Gambia, where they are highly recognized and appreciated by the people and authorities of the country.

They were received at Banjul Airport by Cuban Ambassador Ruben J. Abelinda. the head of the medical team, Dr. Juan Oquendo Montes; And other managers.

The Gambian Minister of Health, Dr. Ahmadou Lamine Samateh, and the Cuban Ambassador have renewed the health agreement they have maintained for nearly three decades. Both expressed their satisfaction with the modernization of the agreement and agreed that its signing demonstrates the positive relations between their governments and their peoples, who are united by their history, roots, culture and a friendship built on mutual respect and solidarity.

The history of cooperation between the two countries dates back to June 1996, when 38 medical workers arrived in The Gambia as technical assistance. Starting in 1999, the comprehensive health program was implemented, making this country one of the first African countries to embody this experience in the presence of more than 150 collaborators.

Currently, more than 100 specialists, graduates and technicians from the Antilles archipelago are providing their humanitarian services in The Gambia.

Also since 1999, professors from the island have been teaching classes at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Banjul, which was created on the initiative of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.
