(CNN) – A 19-year-old woman suspected of being hit by a shark on New Zealand’s North Island has died on Thursday.

According to local police, the woman was injured in the water near Waihi beach on Thursday afternoon and died shortly afterwards.

New Zealand police on Friday identified 19-year-old Kela Marlowe from Hamilton, 241 miles from the capital Wellington.

“Early signs he may have been injured by a shark,” New Zealand Police said in a news release on Thursday.

Police said the cause of Marlowe’s death would eventually be revealed by the coroner.

“We appreciate the fact that his death was so traumatic for those who were at Waihi Beach yesterday, and we provide victim support services to anyone in need,” police added.

Shark attacks are rare in New Zealand. The last time a deadly shark attack took place was in 2013, when a 40-year-old swimmer died at sea near the famous Muriwai beach in the west of Auckland.

The last time a deadly shark attack took place was in 2018, according to the New Zealand Police website. One person was attacked by a shark and taken to hospital for treatment.
