Los Angeles (USA), March 13 (EFE). Hispanic Ariana DeBose won Best Supporting Actress for her role in West Side Story at the 27th Critics Choice Awards, delivered this afternoon in Los Angeles (USA).

DeBose’s performance as Anita in this film was directed by Steven Spielberg before nominees Caitríona Balfe (“Belfast”), Ann Dowd (“Mass”), Kirsten Dunst (“The Power of the Dog”), Aunjanue Ellis (“King Richard”) and Rita Moreno (“West Side Story”).

For the latter, with whom she shared a cast on West Side Story, DeBose wanted to say a few words of thanks during her award reception from London, hours before she won a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the same production.

Moreno played Anita in 1961, in the first film adaptation of the popular musical “West Side Story” (1957).

“She has opened the way for many women and I am always by her side, neither in the front nor in the back,” the actress emphasized.

Recognition of the prestigious British Critics Choice and BAFTA Awards has been added to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG, in English) Award for Best Supporting Actress which DeBose won two weeks ago and the 2022 Golden Globes Award.

If Puerto Rican Rita Moreno becomes the first Latina to win an Academy Award, as Best Supporting Actress with Anita, everything seems to indicate Ariana Debos will win another bust in the same category and play the same character sixty years later.

In the race for the Academy Awards, Ariana DeBose starts as the favorite against Jesse Buckley (“Lost Daughter”), Judi Dench (“Belfast”), Kirsten Dunst (“Power of the Dog”) or Unjano Ellis (“King Richard”).

The last word of the Hollywood Academy will be on March 27 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles (USA). EFE
