Diplomat Agustín Santos Maraver will be Somar’s No. 2 for Madrid

Madrid, June 12 Diplomat Agustín Santos Maraver will be the number 2 candidate for Soumar’s candidacy for Madrid in the general elections of July 23, in which the party of the second vice-president of the government, Yolanda Diaz, will compete for the first time.

On Monday, Diaz herself confirmed on social media the appointment of Santos Maravir, Spain’s ambassador to the United Nations since August 2018.

And Diaz declared: “I want to tell you some good news: Agustín Santos Maraver, the current ambassador of Spain to the United Nations, will be Somar’s No. 2 for Madrid.”

The Sumar leader also stressed that “the defense of pluralism, human rights and the global fight against climate change are central” to its formation.

Agustín Santos Maraver replaced Jorge Moragas as Permanent Representative and Ambassador of Spain to the United Nations in New York.

He was chief of staff to Secretary of State Miguel Ángel Moratinos between July 2008 and January 2011, when he was appointed Ambassador representing Spain to United Nations organizations in Geneva.

Born in Los Angeles (USA) on August 21, 1955, he holds a degree in philosophy, literature, political science and sociology from Complutense University in Madrid and joined the diplomatic service in 1982.

He was posted to the Spanish Embassies in Beijing, Havana, Washington, D.C., and Canberra and was the Spanish Consul General in Cape Town (South Africa).

In Madrid, he held the positions of President of the Technical Cabinet of the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development (AECID), Adviser to the Diplomatic Cabinet of the Presidency of the Government, Executive Adviser for Parliamentary Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Chief of the Minister’s Cabinet.

In April 2017, he was appointed Consul of Spain in Perpignan until his appointment as Permanent Ambassador of Spain to the United Nations in New York in August 2018.
