Shoukry renewed his Cairo counterpart’s full support for efforts to reach a comprehensive political settlement to the Syrian crisis as soon as possible, according to an official statement.

It was the first visit by a high-ranking Syrian official to Egypt in more than a decade due to the differences raised by the conflict.

After the earthquakes of last February, Shukri traveled to that country, where he was received by President Bashar al-Assad.

The Speaker of the Egyptian Parliament, Hanafi El-Gabaly, also arrived in Damascus to show solidarity in the face of the damage caused by the earthquakes.

El Gabaly and Shoukry’s visit was the first by high-ranking Egyptian officials to that country in more than 10 years.
