The European Statistics Office indicated on Wednesday that unemployment in the euro zone maintained its downward trend in September and settled at 7.4% of the workforce, after 7.5% in August, although it remained high in Spain.

The rebound in economic activity since the spring after the strong impact of containment measures against the coronavirus pandemic continues to drive the improvement in the labor market, according to Eurostat.

Looking at the EU as a whole – including, therefore, bloc countries that do not adopt the euro as their current currency – unemployment was 6.7% of the economically active population, up from 6.9% the previous month.

Thus, Eurostat estimated that in the entire European Union there are 14.32 million unemployed, 12.07 million of them in the countries adopting the single currency.

Eurostat also noted that unemployment in the eurozone among men was 6.5% in September, although it was 7% among women, although a slight decrease in both cases compared to August.

Spain recorded the highest level of unemployment in the Eurozone in September, with a rise of 14.6% of the economically active population, followed by Greece which showed a result of 13.3%.

At the other end of the scale, the Czech Republic experienced unemployment of just 2.6%, while the Netherlands registered 3.1%.

Among the so-called heavyweight European economy, Germany recorded 3.4% unemployment, while France closed in September at 7.7% and Italy at 9.2%.

The Eurozone is the space shared by the 19 countries of the European Union that have adopted the euro as their currency, and whose monetary policy is administered by the European Central Bank (ECB).
