Google is eliminating key positions and will move some jobs to India and Mexico

NEW YORK (EFE).- Google has laid off 200 workers from its “central unit” as part of a reorganization that includes moving some of the company's functions to India and Mexico, CNBC reported.

The layoffs include IT staff, the Python developer team, technical infrastructure, security, application platforms, engineering, and core developers.

According to the company, the central unit is responsible for building the technical foundation behind the company's main products and protecting users' online security.

At least 50 of the laid-off workers were engineering professionals who worked at the company's offices in Sunnyvale, California, according to CNBC.

He also noted that Asim Hussein, vice president of the developer ecosystem at Google, informed his team of the layoffs in an email last week and in a meeting that assured his employees that this was the largest reduction planned for his group this year.

“We intend to maintain our existing global presence while expanding into high-growth global workforce locations,” he said in an email to workers.

Google subsidiary Alphabet will begin layoffs in 2023

Alphabet, Google's parent company, began the cuts in 2023 and had already cut 12,000 jobs by January this year. At the beginning of the year, it announced more mass layoffs and the hardest hit departments were engineering and instrumentation. Meanwhile, it focuses on artificial intelligence (AI).

The latest cuts come as the company enjoys its fastest growth rate since early 2022, as well as improving profit margins.
