Highlights of clean energy production at Itaipu Hydropower Plant

Gwen in Egypt participated in a discussion on sustainable water and energy solutions through innovation and the use of modern technologies, which were developed in the context of the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27), in the Egyptian city. The expert presented the company’s bilateral measures contributing to the implementation of the 2015 Paris Agreement to limit the average increase in global temperature to 2 degrees Celsius – in relation to pre-industrial levels – and redouble efforts not to exceed the 1.5 degrees level.

In this sense, Gwen mentioned the use of renewable energy sources, even in extreme weather events, and environmental protection strategies, such as reforestation and biodiversity conservation.

Meanwhile, Sergio Mendes, a climatologist with the Itaipu Reservoir Department, explained on the Egyptian stage the environmental monitoring processes that take place in the entity, such as analysis and monitoring of climate, water quality and ichthyophona.

Mendez considered this work to be vital to making adequate predictions and implementing the necessary initiatives to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

In this way it is possible to increase the useful life of the reservoir and to preserve the natural resources of the area.

The Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant is located on the Paraná River, along the border between Brazil and Paraguay.

The event was organized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (Undesa), in parallel with COP 27, which will take place from the 6th to the 18th next.
