In Mexico, there are 7.5 million people with disabilities

The head of the Department of Child Rehabilitation at the National Rehabilitation Institute said at a symposium on this topic that these patients may suffer from physical, mental, intellectual or sensory deficiencies, and warned that various obstacles to accessing services or infrastructure could prevent their free development in society. .

However, the institute responsible for this specialty provides services to those people with disabilities, especially those who suffer from motor, sensory, visual and hearing problems. During the year 2022, it treated 187,735 patients free of charge through external consultations.

The specialist pointed out that the main causes of disability for patients who come to the institute are fractures, accidents and neurological diseases. In addition, sick children with congenital problems that may lead to visual and sensory diseases are cared for.

For his part, the head of the Labor and Educational Rehabilitation Division, Jorge Hernandez, explained that disability is a health condition that can be the result of an illness or an accident.

He said that disabilities are classified into physical, mental, intellectual, psychosocial, multiple, sensory, auditory and visual, and in terms of body functions they can be mild, moderate, severe, complete, temporary and permanent.

He pointed out that the obstacles these people face are structural and technological, and above all, those related to the attitude of citizens and the absence of public policies necessary for their full development.

World Health Organization data indicate that 1.3 billion people; That is, one out of every six people in the world suffers from some type of disability.
