Jamaica promotes agricultural development

Holness ordered Agriculture Secretary Floyd Green to transform St. James Southern under a development plan focused on agriculture, health care and civic infrastructure.

He pointed out that the country has agricultural parks, where arable land owned by the government and private is analyzed in depth, and then producers are placed on it, supplied with seedlings and assisted in marketing.

He said that at St James Southern we will establish several agricultural parks, where we will find young people who show interest in this sector.

He also noted the importance of constructing agricultural roads in the constituency, so that farmers can transport their produce to the market more efficiently and conveniently, especially in the Katadoba area.

He acknowledged that water scarcity is one of the factors slowing down agricultural production, noting that building water reservoirs and watersheds will solve this problem.

We will again build huge storage tanks, as was the case in the 1970s, and catchment areas near crops. He concluded that this way, we will have water available in a more consistent manner.
