Local cyclist Kian Watts (from New Zealand) has won the second stage of the 37th edition of the New Zealand Classic, a 127.3 kilometer day between the towns of Masterton and Martinborough this Thursday.

Kian Watts won the event at Martinborough in the Wellington region, ahead of his teammates in second and third place, New Zealand national team George Jackson and Australian Elliott Schultz (Bridgelane). It's the second year in a row that Watts has won the event.

“The wind was the same as last year, but it was very strong. It wasn't too bad for us because we were in front throughout the stage … The boys did an incredible job. I had to give it everything. In the final section “You know, the hard work the kids did, I was first and second. Just wanted to finish! You can't ask for more,” explains Watts.

Fellow New Zealander Aaron Gade (Cel., New Zealand), who won the first stage and wore the leader's jersey, retained the leader's jersey by finishing eighth.

After this second lap, Kate commands the general standings, 4 and 6 seconds ahead of Kian Watts and local Bailey O'Donnell (Oxford Edge Cycling).

The New Zealand Classic will continue its contentious third stage this Friday, with a more broken profile and 126.9 kilometers that will link the town of Masterton with Admiral Hill, which averages 4.1 per cent over its final 9.4 kilometres.
