Lewandowski set a record 43 goals in 2021

Berlin (AFP) – Robert Lewandowski snatched another old record on Friday from Bayern Munich legend Gerd Muller.

The Polish star scored his 43rd goal in this year’s Bundesliga in Bayern’s 4-0 win over Wolfsburg. Thus, he has surpassed the previous record for the most goals in a calendar year set in 1972 by “El Bombardero”.

Lewandowski broke Muller’s record for most goals in a season in May, reaching 41 in the last minute of a 5-2 win over Augsburg. He returned on Friday to be present late on the scoreboard and scored 87 minutes.

“It was a fantastic goal,” Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann said. “Oba (Dayut Obekano) touched the ball and Jamal ran away very well. It was a very difficult goal to achieve.”

Nagelsmann noted that Lewandowski scored with his left foot and weak leg. When asked if his leg was really weak, he replied, “Apparently not.”

Thomas Muller – without any family connection to Gerd – celebrated his 400th Bundesliga game by scoring a goal and leaving the table for another. In this way, he helped Bayern Munich lead by nine points before the rest of the matches on the seventeenth day.

Upamecano and Leroy Sane also scored a goal.

Mueller was responsible for scoring early. At 7 minutes, he found a rebound after Quinn Castells saved a shot from Serge Gnabry.

Wout Weghorst was close to the equalizer, but was stopped by Manuel Neuer. Weghorst got another chance later despite Bayern controlling the ball.

Lewandowski came close with a header that Castiels managed to neutralize, but Bayern emerged with renewed strength against a team that threw them back after the break.

Muller made Upamecano in the team’s second goal, in the 57th minute, three minutes before Sani scored with an excellent shot.

Gnabry did his best to get Lewandowski to score, but his shot was again contained by Castells. When it looked like he would have to settle his record-sharing with Gerd Muller, Lewandowski scored to remain single with the brand.

The Pole had already scored 18 goals in the league this season – more than the entire Wolfsburg team. He scored 23 goals in 20 previous matches against Wolfsburg – more than any opponent.
