Louis Severino debuted in 2023 and is keeping the Yankees packed

Cincinnati – The Yankees are having a great time lately.

They completed a three-game sweep against the Reds B 4-1 win Sunday afternoon in front of 33,828 spectators at Great American Ball Park. This is New York’s fourth consecutive victory, the club’s sixth in the last seven meetings, and the eleventh in the last 14 matches.

“We can all say that we have improved a lot today,” said midfielder Harrison Bader.

The reason for Badr’s suspension is the return of Dominican right-hander Luis Severino.

Severino made his first appearance of the season after starting the year on the disabled list with a strained right back muscle injury. He pitched 4.2 innings and allowed one run, four hits and one walk while striking out five. The right-hander reached the 75-pitch limit with one out before he was eligible to win.

“It’s amazing to see him back on the mound,” Bader said. “The way he works, his stuff, his energy. Being able to see what he’s doing, the way he’s working. I have a very good view of midfield. He’s electric. I couldn’t be happier with him coming back.”

Yankees manager Aaron Boone commented: “Syvi was great. Pitching nearly five complete innings was significant. I think he got better and better. The pitches he missed were good. He finished the day emptying the tank, so you see he had a little bit of Extra fuel at the end of the game.

Severino felt he was getting stronger as the day progressed.

He commented, “I felt really good.” “I felt like he was attacking the area after the first rally. Everything else was good there. I felt good. I was saving something for last.”

Although satisfied with the opening, Severino would have liked to take the win.

“I was disappointed,” he admitted. “But we got the win. That’s the most important thing.”

Severino walked Jonathan India, the first batsman he faced, which quickly led to a controversial play. Two periods later, Spencer Steer flied down the right field line. Jake Powers reached the ball in fair territory, but couldn’t keep it in the glove. At first it was called a foul, but the Reds protested and the decision was overturned.

Boone was sent off for arguing with the referee.

The umpires awarded Steer a brace and India’s home plate in the match, giving the Reds a 1-0 lead. Bone wanted an explanation as to why India was being sent to the plate. Bonn revealed that he was sent off because what was decided in the replay could not be discussed.

Reds’ Hunter Green faced no fewer than 12 batters through the first four innings, thanks to a double play and steal.

But Willie Calhoun started fifth with a walk. Four pitches later, Bader hit 108.4 mph and 411 feet for his fourth home run of 2023, giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead.

Gleyber Torres made it 3-1 with a solo shot to right, his seventh home run of the year. The Yankees added a run on Anthony Volpe’s RBI double in the seventh.

After Severino left the mound, New York retired their 11th in a row before the Reds loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth. The bullpen posted a 1.34 ERA in the seven-game road trip, a big reason the Yankees went 6-1 on the trip.

“Awesome tour,” Boone summed up. “It’s been a tough period, 33 games in 34 days. We’ve had a few hits. We’ve got some guys out there. I’m excited about how well this team can compete. They come in eagerly, they prepare and they compete. They’re doing the work at a high level at the moment.”
