Malaga announces the exhibition of the sculptor Picasso

Picasso’s nickname. Theme and body, the exhibition will be installed in the museum named after the author of Guernika and Las señoritas de Avignon, as part of the activities honoring the illustrious plastic artist.

Starting in the fall, the exhibition will move to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Basque Country. The body, as the artist’s tool and as the ultimate object of representation, is the mainstay of the first major exhibition focusing on the artist’s sculptures.

Curated by Carmen Jimenez, it is part of the international program Picasso Celebration 1973-2023, organized with the support of the National Committee Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Death of the Spanish Artist, also under the auspices of France.

Carmen Jimenez, who was the first director of the Museo Picasso Málaga, selected a group of sculptures that combine the plurality of methods used by the author to expand the shapes of the human body, dividing it into a variety of shapes and types, using all possible materials: wood, iron, plaster, cement, Crucifixion, bronze including his sculptural works.

According to the expert, the artist envisioned this system as a form of expression comparable to painting, drawing, engraving or ceramics.

Likewise, the exhibition organizers stated that sculpture became more prolific during the period of cubism, but that he had developed the genre since the beginning of his extensive artistic career.

Treating them almost as members of his family, he appreciated the company of the sculptures and enjoyed recreating them in a wide variety of materials and positions. They said that Picasso kept most of them in his private collection during his lifetime.

Giménez is a Spanish curator and curator who has served as an advisor to the Ministry of Culture and the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
