Malaysia vs Chile action soon; New Zealand take on world No. 3 Netherlands in 2023

Netherlands seek early qualification; Chile and Malaysia are desperate for their first win

Netherlands take on New Zealand They qualified for the last 16 of the World Cup in their second Group C match at the Birsa Munda International Stadium on Monday.

The Dutch beat Malaysia 4-0 but were left unsatisfied and frustrated with their performance. Head coach Jeroen Delmy and captain Thierry Brinkman both echoed the sentiment that the team “can do better”.

“There was room for improvement [in our game]. The quality of our technical skills was not good enough and we could not get a good rhythm in the game. Malaysia played very defensively and didn’t really want to play hockey. We need two teams to get some run going,” Delmy said.

New Zealand would have got Malaysia’s trick when they beat Chile 3-1 in their first match, with a pattern of following and deceiving the inexperienced Dutch without giving them room to attack.

The Blacksticks have the pace and penetration to hurt the Dutch in transition from attack and midfield.

However, Brinkmann noted that the Netherlands team will try to adapt and drag the opposition to sit back and counter the approach.

Chile face Malaysia in the other Group C game, with both teams hoping to qualify for the crossover.

Despite the loss, Chile finished the match strongly with a goal for the first time at the World Cup and went close with their penalty corners. Malaysia coach Arul Anthony felt that the team should eliminate individual mistakes and seize the opportunities that come their way.
