Mongolia opens laboratory for women’s health program

Montsame news agency confirmed that the Luxembourg government and the United Nations Population Fund have supported the construction of the facility that will allow the diagnosis of many disorders, including early detection and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases and cervical cancer.

The initiative, which is part of the international programme, aims to enhance access to quality maternal health services and put an end to maternal and neonatal deaths, Khalid Sharifi, head of the UNFPA office in the Asian country, explained at the opening.

He said the global COVID-19 pandemic has posed new challenges such as the need for rapid diagnosis and management of infection, which continues to deteriorate women’s health during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period.

He said the center, located in Urgo Maternity Hospital, is made up of 22 types of equipment, furniture and other paraphernalia, and will improve the ability to identify adverse maternal and perinatal infections.

He also reported that two other similar laboratories will be set up in Ulaanbaatar maternity hospitals, which provide services to more than 30,000 women annually.

Sector organizations gather numerous evidence of the global impact of the Covid-19 pandemic due to interruptions in the management of the contraceptive supply chain, as well as delays in specialized care, quality diagnosis and early detection of maternal complications.

Therefore, Khaled Sharifi said, establishing advanced molecular biological diagnostics will improve the quality of diagnostic and treatment services to ensure safe pregnancy and childbirth.
