Anti-vaccine protesters launched a “burning object” at police this Tuesday (02.22.2022), three of whom were admitted to hospital, adding to the tension in their struggle, which began weeks ago.

Prime Minister Jacinta Artern said the apparent acid attack was “absolutely disgraceful”, adding that another protester had driven his vehicle into a police line and stopped attacking officers inches away.

The incidents took place near New Zealand’s parliament on Tuesday morning as police set up concrete barricades to control a crowded protest camp in central Wellington for two weeks.

Discard human feces

The movement began as a struggle against compulsory vaccinations inspired by a similar movement in Canada.

But it grew to 1,500 and included other demands, including extreme right-wing anti-government and anti-press news.

All three officers admitted to the hospital are “recovering well,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Richard Chambers.

He accused the “shocking” attack of being “a specific group within the opposition”. On Monday, police said some protesters threw human feces at them.
