The New Zealand government has said it will delay plans to reopen without isolations until the end of February due to the rapid expansion of the Omigron variant in other countries.

The maritime nation, which has maintained a low number of infections and deaths from the virus and implemented one of the world’s toughest policies during epidemics, had planned to allow free entry from isolation to residents of New Zealand and Australia from mid-January. Already vaccinated.

Thanks to this, Chris Hipkins, the minister in response to Govt-19, argued in a statement that the move “seeks to stop the rapid expansion of Omigran we see abroad.”

“It’s a disappointment and for many it will change their vacation plans, but it’s important for travelers to establish these changes to consider their plans in a timely manner,” Hipkins said, stressing that the policy is “absolutely necessary.” We must continue to protect the people.

Although the Minister made no mention of travelers from other parts of the world expected to be able to enter the country without isolation from mid-April, it is expected that these new measures will also change previously announced plans. The remaining details, however, are not yet known.

New Zealand has already vaccinated more than 90% of its population with a full schedule, which will speed up the administration of a booster dose.

“While two doses (vaccine) provide good protection against acute Omigran disease, the third dose provides greater protection against the spread of Govit-19 and reduces the chance of serious infections,” the minister explained. .

New Zealand announced that it would extend its isolation from 7 to 10 days upon entry into the country and reduce the need for a negative COVID-19 test to 48 hours prior to departure.

The country has accumulated 13,495 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 49 deaths since the outbreak, and last Thursday the Omigran case was reported within its territory for the first time to a vaccinated traveler who tested positive while he was in an isolated center.
