Hamas issued a statement expressing its “deep concern” after a helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and other Iranian officials crashed on Sunday.

Details about the accident are still vague. Hamas expressed its “solidarity” with the president and the “brotherly Iranian people.”

He added: “In this painful incident, we express our complete solidarity with the Islamic Republic of Iran, its leaders, government and people, and we ask God Almighty to preserve and guarantee the safety of the Iranian President and his accompanying delegation, and to protect everyone.” Hamas’s statement said, “Removing harm from the brotherly Iranian people.”

Some contextTensions remain high across the Middle East as Israel wages war in Gaza against the Palestinian militant group Hamas, an ally of Iran.

Meanwhile, a decades-long conflict between Israel and Iran erupted in April, when Iran launched an unprecedented attack on Israel. Tehran said the attack was in response to an alleged deadly Israeli air strike on the Iranian consulate in Syria. This exchange led to increased tensions in the Middle East.

Groups allied with Iran, such as the Houthis in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon, have also participated in escalating skirmishes in the region.
