According to an official memorandum from the Palacio de las Garzas (the seat of the executive power), the President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo, came to this conclusion, receiving the President of the Xunta, Alonso Rueda, at a meeting, where he also extolled the status of the isthmus as a meeting point for world trade.

Cortizo thanked the visit and took the opportunity to detail the country’s progress in removing the International Financial Action Task Force’s (GAFI) discriminatory lists, which were included in June 2019.

For its part, the Galician delegation called on the president to inaugurate a monument at the entrance to the Panama Canal in honor of the Galicians who worked to build the highway between the two oceans, in which Cortizo welcomed the initiative of the Nossa Tira Foundation. .

In the talks, they commended the recent visit of Rueda and his accompanying delegation to the Panama Canal to lay the first stone of the monument in honor of the 12,000 Galicians who participated in the construction of this great work.

Rueda, who will continue his tour in Venezuela and Mexico, called for the strengthening of human and commercial relations with Panama, the country of about four thousand Galicians.

Other issues were discussed at the meeting, such as the entry into force of educational cooperation agreements between the University of La Coruña with the Technological University and the International Maritime University of Panama.
