Petro asks to fix cases for peace in Colombia

BOGOTA, Sept. 28 (Prensa Latina) The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, today called for the transformation of the system of institutions responsible for the cause of peace into compliance with the agreement signed in 2016.

He said during his swearing in of the new director of the Special Programs Fund for Peace (Peace Fund), Pablo Francisco Pardo.

The president explained that upon reaching the presidency, he found “in the administration a maze of institutions around the cause of peace in Colombia.”

In his view, all this quality is a mechanism for not doing so because no one has the power to make the agreements reached between the devastated FARC and the state a reality.

However, Pietro asserted, “The popular mandate you have given us in this palace requires us to do so. Those who won, unlike the previous referendum, are those who considered that the peace agreement should be fulfilled.”

In his opinion, these institutions are not fulfilling the task entrusted to them, because they are all located in or near the presidential palace. Because they don’t have a budget, they are distracted and only touch marginal issues in agreements.

Among the problems he encountered, he noted the difficulties in determining a specific amount to obtain more than three million hectares of fertile land and hand it over to the peasants.

“No one knows. No one asked the question. None of those labyrinthine institutions, I’m talking about, asked how to comply with the first point of the peace agreement.”

In this sense, he urged the Colombians to “make effort, not to spend (our) silver on war, but on peace. Peace begins with spending public money on the purchase of fertile land equivalent to three million hectares to achieve the first point.”
