BRUSSELS, April 19 (RHC) This Tuesday’s observance of World Bicycle Day is an added incentive for everyone to save energy, bearing in mind the increasing cost of fossil fuels.

Although the United Nations Organization – the United Nations – issued this date on June 3, transport experts cannot ignore the fact that it is celebrated in a traditional way on April 19.

The goal of either of the two accepted dates is to promote the use of this sustainable, healthy and enjoyable mode of transportation, and to raise awareness of the rights of cyclists, insists the website diinternacionalde.com.

But World Cycling Day on April 19, far from being official, has a strange story behind it.

The day refers to 1943, when Albert Hoffmann (1906-2008, Baden, Switzerland), known as the father of lysergic acid -LSD-, conducted an experiment in his lab where he took 0.25 milligrams of this product to see its effects. And I had to go home by bike. This was due to the fact that as a result of the war (World War II) movement in cars was not allowed.

On that trip he ran into some trouble and ended up at the doctor because he thought the substance had poisoned him. After a few effects, he started to feel a lot of fun and good feelings, and it ended well. The chemist discovered a substance that he thought could be used in the psychiatric world, due to its introspective effects, although he never thought it would be used recreationally.

But in truth, the first time that World Bicycle Day was celebrated was in DeKalb, an American city in Illinois, in 1985. Anyway, one day or another is welcomed, it is commendable to highlight this mode of transportation in the world, for its benefits on Health and Human Movement. (source: latin press).
