Redmagic 9Pro, the smartphone designed for gamers in 2024

Redmagic 9Pro, the smartphone designed for gamers in 2024

There have been many brands that have sought to be an option for video gamers over the past few years, and frankly, only a few have given them continuity, especially in terms of design and cost-benefit value. This is the place Nubia technologya company that started as a subsidiary of ZTE, sought to set standards, aimed squarely at all gamers smart phones With Redmagic. After several weeks of use, we can finally give you our impressions of what's new Red Magic 9 ProA smartphone for gamers.

Cameras that are compatible

This device has a 50MP + 50MP + 2MP rear camera with Samsung GN 5 1/1.57 sensor, optical image stabilization (OIS), 7P lens, and anti-reflective system with APL coating. As for the front camera, it is 16 megapixels below the screen, with a pixel size of: 1.12 micrometers and aperture: 2.0.

Image methodology

We captured all images with autofocus, as we do with the top of the range to see shutter speed and performance in different lighting scenarios.

In close-up images, colors appeared a bit washed out compared to what we had in reality. This happened to us under normal conditions and in low light.

In night photographs, the shutter is slow and may misinterpret some light sources, as well as lacking detail in distant objects.

Shots at the maximum 10x zoom may show some graininess and are only of average quality in good lighting conditions. The macro, for its part, is good without being amazing because it contains errors in the money.

In natural lighting conditions, shots are at the top of the range but are nothing out of the ordinary.

The selfie camera is the one that lacks maximum quality as it is located behind the screen and usually drops to a lower level in low light conditions.

The software integrates functions that make it easy to capture star trails, starry skies, a larger electronic aperture, make physics charts, slow-motion shots at 120 or 240 fps, time-lapse, wide-angle, scan documents, take ID photos, panoramas, Clone, multiple exposure, night mode, portrait mode and expert mode.

Video, for its part, allows recording at 720, 1080 and 4K at 30 or 60 frames per second, as well as at 8K at 30 frames per second. It is important to stress that the stabilization is not completely fine and it only contains H.264 and H265 formats as well as HDR10.

a screen

The 6.8-inch Corning Gorilla Glass FHD+ AMOLED display with 2480 x 1116 resolution, up to 120Hz refresh rate with up to 960Hz touch sampling rate and 2000Hz instant touch sampling rate, benefits greatly from the side with a screen-to-body ratio of 93.7% With a maximum brightness of 1600 lumens.

On this screen we can see HDR content on Amazon Prime Video and up to 2160 at 60 fps on YouTube. Disney+, HBO Max, and Star+ can be watched in high definition.

It also includes a customization section where we can choose the screen refresh rate, which we can leave in automatic mode at 60, 90 or 120 Hz and let it tell us what rate to use in the status bar. We can adjust the color in 3 different modes: colorful, standard or soft and we can adjust the temperature in 3 levels, comfortable, normal or cool.

performance

The Redmagic 9Pro itself is a beast and the fact that it adds a heatsink to keep the processor at temperature is appreciated considering the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 gets very hot.

The configuration we are evaluating is the one that combines 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage, although in our area there is another configuration that has 16GB of RAM with 512GB of storage. Regarding multitasking, we had no problem, in fact, we consider that the processor left a little to be desired, because when performing the test that we always carry out to play Fortnite at the highest values we stream live from Twitch, it remained at 45 fps on average When we used the Nothing Phone (2) equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor and the same amount of memory and storage, we maintained an average of 60 frames per second, which is the same case with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 of the Honor Magic 5 Pro.

Games like Call of Duty: Mobile or Diablo Immortal ran at over 60 FPS without major issues and it is important to note that the heatsink keeps the temperature low.

Apps like Alexa, Furbo, Google Assistant, Philips Hue, Hue Sync, Ring, and syncing with headphones like the WH-1000XM5 or Huawei FreeClip didn't cause any major issues. Likewise, interaction with the LG Smart TV with WebOs was good.

The dedicated Game Mode button seemed like a great addition to us given the level of customization it allows, as you can control the sound, heatsink and performance mode, though we'll review that specifically in the OS section.

My voice

It features two 1115K speakers and 5 magnetic modules that deliver DTS:X ULTRA certified high-resolution audio. This can be seen when playing games or listening to music using external speakers. One thing we really liked is that it has a 3.5mm port that can take advantage of its ability to play high-resolution 32-bit/384kHz audio files and the features of Snapdragon Sound.

Sound rating: 9

battery

This beast is powered by a 6,500mAh dual-cell battery with compatible 80W fast charging, and with heavy usage this can last for an entire day. The care that has gone into charging is striking, because when connected, the heatsink is automatically activated to prevent the device from overheating. It is important to note that it lacks wireless charging.

As in other devices in this category, it adds a program with which we can optimize battery usage with administrators that help us identify applications or devices that drain the battery so that we can adjust them manually if we want.

Peripherals

This smartphone comes with an 80W fast charger, a SIM ejector tool and a transparent protective case. The best thing without a doubt is its customizable digital buttons to enhance the experience of using some video games.

The experience of opening the device is worth highlighting, as the packaging in particular is very delicate, demonstrating the dedication towards gamers.

design

The Redmagic 9Pro respects the design of its predecessor, but the camera reconfiguration, RGB details on the heatsink, digital buttons, and number on the back make it look stunning. It is undoubtedly a smartphone that you can look at in the same way due to its sturdy design and tactile feel that generates that feeling of owning a premium device. The Gamer Mode activation button is an additional feature that makes it easier to customize during gameplay. Its dimensions of 229 grams are 164 x 76.4 x 8.9 mm and its glass design integrates perfectly with the ICE 13.0 cooling system, which features the largest vapor chamber with an area of 10,182 square millimeters resulting in up to 25°C drop in the device temperature and thus translating into better performance.

However, it adds standards like Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, and USB-C 3.2 that help provide next-generation connectivity. It is important to emphasize that the equipment is not water or dust resistant.

Design rating: 9.5

OS

This terminal works with the operating system REDMAGIC OS 9.0 on Android 14 and has additions such as a personal assistant that reacts to certain actions, emphasizing that it is only to give some life to the device. What definitely shines is all the gaming software, with levels of customization letting you edit shortcuts, customize network values, and integrate services like Xbox, Steam, PlayStation, and even Epic itself.

You can also connect a keyboard and mouse to use in presentation mode.

It is important to note that during the analysis we did not encounter problems with unexpected crashes or shutdowns.

OS rating: 10

Redmagic 9Pro is the best smartphone for gaming in 2024 but we must keep in mind that it makes big sacrifices as the camera and display are not exactly what we would have liked, but taking into account the price versus the processor and hardware included, by far, this is the option to go for. Think about it if all we want is to play.
