Miami Gardens, Florida – A 13-year-old boy who died over the weekend after a shooting inside a Miami Gardens home has been identified by family members as George Harris Jr.

Tributes were posted on social media this weekend to honor the life of the young teenager who played football for Liberty City.

Harris is believed to have been playing video games inside a bedroom at a home on Northwest 207th Street near 38th Street in Miami Gardens on Saturday night with several other teens.

“Right now, it appears there are kids playing with a gun,” Miami Gardens Police Sergeant Emanuele Jeanty said.

Police rushed to the home at around 7:40pm on Saturday evening where they found Harris suffering from a gunshot wound to the back of the head.

Paramedics took the teen to Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood in critical condition, but he later died.

“A lot of people have guns these days, and it's up to us to make sure that if we want to have guns in our home, we keep them locked and make sure they stay out of children's reach,” Jeanty said. .

Harris died several hours after arriving at the hospital.

“I can tell you that the police department provides gun locks and we provide different types of tools to family members and homeowners to keep these firearms out of the reach of children, because the safety of our children is our top priority,” Ginty said.

Investigators detained several people for questioning, but it is unclear whether anyone will face charges.

Meanwhile, Harris' mother posted on social media calling on the community to honor her son during the vigil scheduled for Wednesday.
