Samsonova came close to the top 10 in the WTA world rankings

Samsonova came close to the top 10 in the WTA world rankings

A big job brought him a big promotion and he reached his highest position. Russian Lyudmila Samsonova, a finalist at the Canadian Open in Montreal, has moved up six places and is ranked No. 12 in the WTA World Ranking, a rating still topped by Pole Iga Swiatek.

Samsonova, 24, already owns four professional singles titles (three she won in 2022), and her run into the deciding match in Montreal helped her slip out of 18th place and reach 12th, close to the coveted top 10.

On Canadian soil, the Russian got rid of the weight names: she beat Belarusian Arina Sabalenka, No. 2 in the world and owner of the Australian Open, in the round of 16 and Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, No. 3 WTA, in the semi-finals. In addition, the Swiss Belinda Bencic, who was 12th and the current Olympic champion, was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Swiatek is still on top, almost 1000 points ahead of Sabelenka, so they continue to fight for the throne in Cincinnati and at the US Open.

Canadian-American champion Jessica Pegula, 29, improved her score but stayed clear of Sabalenka. This title, the third of his career, allowed him to establish himself on the ranking podium.

Among Latin Americans, the comfortable leader is still Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia, but she has fallen seven places and is now No. 19 in the world. Followers from the region continue to rank in the top 70: Colombia’s Camila Osorio ranks 65th and Argentine Nadia Podoroska ranks 69th.
