Sony SRG-A12 Launched – 4K PTZ Camera with Built-in AI Capabilities

Sony recently launched a new 4K PTZ camera with built-in AI algorithms capable of subject tracking and framing shots independently: the Sony SRG-A12. In September 2022, Sony released a full-frame PTZ camera FR7, which can be regarded as Sony FX6 on the remote PTZ head. However, a PTZ camera with a full-frame image sensor has its advantages and disadvantages, as a shallow depth of field at conferences, for example, can cause focusing problems.

This time around, Sony is back with an all-in-one PTZ camera (the FR7 is an interchangeable lens system) with a smaller image sensor and making use of AI algorithms that can frame and track humans in a shot. automatically.

Sony SRG-A12 – Features

The Sony SRG-A12 is a compact PTZ camera designed primarily for video conferencing, tele-education and live broadcasting. The camera features a 1/2.5 inch type CMOS image sensor that can capture images up to UHD 4K at 30 frames per second.

The PTZ camera has a built-in 12x optical zoom (lens-equivalent focal length of 4.4-52.8mm) with a maximum aperture of F/2-3.7.

On the back of the SRG-A12 you’ll find:

• One HDMI output and one 3G-SDI output.
• One RJ45 LAN port.
• Two RJ45 control I/O ports compatible with RS-422 and VISCA control protocols.
• 3.5mm stereo audio input.
• Single barrel 19.5V DC power input.

On the front of the camera is an indicator light. Finally, there is a 1/4″-20 tripod mount on the bottom of the SRG-A12.

According to Sony, the powerful motors enable “fast and accurate pan/tilt action to ensure the camera can accurately track the presenter’s movements.” You can control the pan/tilt/zoom of the camera using the included infrared remote control, the optional RM-IP500 remote controller, or by connecting the camera to a Mac/PC/Windows tablet.

As you can see, there is nothing on the spec sheet that we haven’t seen before, but the main selling points of a PTZ camera are on the inside.

The AI-based features of the Sony SRG-A12

The SRG-A12 features built-in AI algorithms and analysis that are able to compose footage without an operator. According to Sony, this PTZ Auto Framing technology can automatically detect and track a person’s position within the camera frame. Also, algorithms need to be able to lock onto a subject even when there are multiple people in the frame.

Then, if the person in the frame moves, the camera will automatically pan/tilt/zoom to keep the subject properly framed.

The camera has three built-in recording modes: full body, waist, and close-up. Additionally, you can store and recall up to 256 preset camera positions, which is useful if you frequently shoot the same type of content.

Sony SRG-A40 – Features

Besides the SRG-A12, Sony has also released the SRG-A40. The only difference between the two models is the optical zoom: 12x optical zoom on the SRG-A12 and 40x on the SRG-A40.

The Sony SRG-A12 is available now for $3,049.95 / €3,537.58, while the SRG-40 retails for $3,599.95 / €4,225.44.

Both models are available in black or white and come with an AC power adapter, infrared remote control, two ceiling mounts, a metal cable, an HDMI cable mounting plate, and all necessary hardware.
