San Juan (Argentina) (AFP) – Irishman Sam Bennett (Bora Hansgrohe) won the first stage of the Vuelta a San Juan-2023 on Sunday, valid for category 2 of the UCI Pro Tour Circuit, in an attractive identification in the city of San Juan (western Argentina).
Bennett prevailed in the final race with a time of 3 hours 19 minutes 16 seconds to take the overall leader’s jersey.
For Bennett, 32, it is his first victory of the season, the 60th of his personal career and a return to success five months after he won the third stage of the Vuelta a España-2022.
This Sunday, he overtook Michael Murkoff and Giacomo Nizzolo in setting the first stage in San Juan, where he started and finished at the Aldo Cantone Sports Center after 143.9 kilometers of travel.
“I’m very happy,” said Bennett. “It’s good to start the season like this. The sprint was a bit crazy, very tense and complicated, but everyone comes here to win, and staying with the win is important for our team.” Once he reaches the finish line.

The second stage will take place on Monday with an ascending route in the northeast between Valle Fertil and Gachal, 201.1km.
La Vuelta a San Juan, which has seven stages and this time without a time trial, will be held again in 2023 after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic.
