Study in Spain? The government imposes this new measure on foreigners

Spain’s Pedro Sanchez government this week put into effect a new law that requires a compulsory university entrance test and specifically targets foreign students from outside the European Union, whose universities do not have similarly international agreements with the Iberian country.

From this month, students who want to obtain a certain degree in Spanish universities face legislative change, especially those from the United States or Canada, from countries in Latin America, North Africa and Asia, but it does not include Chinese citizens.

report from note And El Mundo asserts that “the mark for entering the university will be calculated by weighting the baccalaureate qualification by 60% and the qualification in this exam by 40%, which means a new barrier to the internationalization of the Spanish university system”.

The new LOMLOE organic education law was approved in December 2019 and excludes not only the Chinese, but also those who come from Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Iceland or Andorra, who, although they do not belong to the European Union, have a reciprocity agreement.

Studies and Masters in Spain

The numbers show that Spain is one of the countries in the world with the most internationalized education system. Before the pandemic, it was the European country that received the largest number of students from other countries in its institutions, over 47,000 followed by Germany, with 32,000 foreign students.

Among other requirements, Spanish universities require several documents from foreign students before the admission process. These include the place where the studies have been completed, the available academic title, among others.

In some cases, the University requests the accreditation issued by UNEDassis (University Application Service for International Students in Spain) which is obtained through the website of the National University of Distance Education (UNED) to process said application.
