Mexico City, April 16 (EFE). Freedom of expression and literature as an art of resistance will be the main themes to be followed by the Fiesta del Libro y la Rosa, which will celebrate its 15th anniversary in the Mexican capital from April 21-23. .

“I like that it’s called a party. It’s more than a meeting of booksellers and publishers, it’s a festival in which the National Autonomous University of Mexico and its coordination of cultural dissemination gives the reader the leading role,” Anil Perez told EFE. The idea of ​​discussing freedom of expression arose after the assault last year on novelist Salman Rushdie, who lost his eye by a fanatic, 33 years after Ayatollah Khomeini sentenced the author to death, for the novel The Satanic Verses. , which the religious leader considered offensive to Islam and the Koran.

“Looking at what happened with Salman Rushdie, it seemed to us necessary to create a space on the subject of freedom of expression. We will deal with it on all tables, reading as an art of resistance, writing as resistance, what can make an act of writing, why thoughts can be fraught with risks to the point of losing an eye like Rushdie, ”explained the academic.

First-rate writers such as Peruvian Santiago Roncaliolo, winner of the Alfaguara Prize for Fiction, Argentinian Claudia Pinheiro, Cuban Carlos Manuel Alvarez, who just won the Anagrama Prize for publishing, and Mexicans Alma Delia Murillo and Enrique Serna are among the personalities who will present their books and participate in debates at the festival.

Other notables at the festival include the Iranian critic Negar Azimi, the Argentine painter Esole and the Chilean poet Alejanzadro Zambra, who will discuss journalism, religion and feminism at some of their tables.

“We will have a table on the topic of laughter and we will present young writers, such as the Argentine Sofia Mantilla, author of” Alguien que me nombre “, the winning novel from the novel Private Lessons with authors Jorge Volpe, Pedro Angel Palo and Eloy Uroz”.

The Fiesta del Libro y la Rosa is an intimate meeting of readers that brings together every year thousands of Mexicans with access to discussions on various topics, with reading promoters and academics talking about the latest literary news.

Among the proposals this month is a forum for oral narratives and tributes to authors Ricardo Garibay, David Huerta and Álvaro Uribe.

Novelist Julián Herbert will appear on Friday the 21st with a different profile than the author. Connected to music, which is one of his obsessions, the narrator will introduce himself as a singer with the rock band “Los Tigres de Borges”.
