The health of Ecuador’s President, Guillermo Laso, has stabilized, but he will continue to be hospitalized

(CNN Spanish) – The health of Ecuador’s President, Guillermo Lasso, remains stable, but he will continue to be hospitalized to receive intravenous medication to counteract a urinary tract infection diagnosed last Saturday, the medical team caring for him said Tuesday.

Laso, 67, was admitted that day to the Quito Armed Forces Specialized Hospital feeling generally unwell.

“He developed a high fever and hypoxia, which led to him undergoing several examinations to determine the causes of these symptoms,” said a statement from the Ecuadorean Ministry of Communications.

After the clinical findings, the specialist doctors ruled out the possibility of lung and heart problems. “It was determined to be a severe infection of urinary origin,” the statement added.

During the first days of treatment, doctors reported that Lasso was admitted to the intensive care unit and that as soon as the acute phase of the infection was over, he was transferred to the internal medicine department.

The Ministry of Communications also noted that doctors estimate that the lasso can be discharged within the next 72 hours.
