The city council analyzes the condition of the structure and measures the fluctuations of the floors after a decade of restoration
In recent weeks, Bilbao City Council has been “checking reservation bridges and locks” for the Deusto Bridge. This means that the structure has been subjected to examination. And yesterday technicians measured the plates’ oscillations, something they’ve been doing every two weeks since summer. All this is to find out the dimensions of the problem and its causes, after revealing for months that the bridge moves a lot when vehicles pass, especially under the movement of buses.
What is the ruling? Sources from the works area explained that there are still no conclusions because “we are waiting for the relevant reports”. In any case, a “comprehensive inspection” of the Deusto Bridge is in the works, which this newspaper presented in June, and will be carried out from September.
Getting to this point requires an intense process. A Deusto resident raised the alarm last April in a call to this newspaper. Initially, the city council attributed this phenomenon to changes in temperature, which would affect the necessary clearance of materials in the structure that was designed to be mobile. Above all, when buses pass, when a step of several centimeters forms in the center of the structure, which astonishes those who are not familiar with this phenomenon. Confirming this, the City Council began work to conduct the above reviews and it was in September when the “Keeping and Locks System” was examined. In the works area, they say that based on the test results, repair measures will be taken. A priori, the suspicion is that some elements of the system that keep both sheets stable in the center of the hull may be worn out now that they haven’t risen. The last restoration of the Deusto Bridge dates back more than a decade.
