The President of Guatemala calls for going to the polls next Sunday

In a message he conveyed from the National Palace of Culture, in light of the approaching polling date, the president revealed that voting represents the supreme will of all residents of this region.

“We will elect new authorities who will be responsible for the directives of our beloved Guatemala,” said the Head of State, and reminded that “suffrage must be public, secret, personal and completely free.”

Giamatti noted, “Our general elections are the most legitimate indication of the common goal we aspire to in Guatemala, the goal that we deserve in Guatemala.”

He stated that Sunday’s event “is another example that we live in a well-established democracy that is consolidated by periodic, free and participatory elections,” noting that “as a first servant of the nation,” he stressed that the government has provided “all guarantees so that the event is organized in an atmosphere of peace, transparency and security.”

The president affirmed that “all the institutions of the executive authority are at the disposal of the Supreme Elections Court to ensure the development of our civil festival within the framework of order and legitimacy.”

And he stressed that, dear citizens, we will go to the polls on June 25 to “cast our votes with patriotism and the exercise of our citizenship.”

“We live in a country full of opportunities,” he commented, adding that this circumstance “encourages us to continue to trust in a prosperous future and well-being for all Guatemalans.”

He noted that with each vote, “our aspirations and desires” for Guatemalans, their interest and the interests of our families are expressed.

“With every vote, we also express those common challenges, which oblige us to unite and confront each other with a positive spirit and progress for the sake of our beloved Guatemala,” he added.

The president considered that “the preservation and perpetuation of our freedoms and the strengthening of our democracy depend on the right to vote.”

About 9.3 million Guatemalans will go to the polls in just two days to elect a new president, vice president, 160 deputies in Congress, 20 in the Central American Parliament and 340 mayors for the period from 2024 to 2028.

If neither candidate receives 50 percent plus one of the votes, the Supreme Electoral Court has scheduled a second round for Sunday, August 20, in which the couple with the majority of votes will participate in the first date.
