First Amendment: Last update:

Madrid (AFP) – The Spanish government on Tuesday approved a 7.5 million euro ($7.9 million) grant to promote the candidacy of Spain, Portugal and Ukraine for the 2030 World Cup.

“What the Council of Ministers approved today is a direct support of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, amounting to 7.5 million euros,” said the spokeswoman for the Minister, Isabel Rodriguez.

Rodriguez added in the press conference held after the weekly cabinet meeting that this amount will be allocated for “preparation and development work to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.”

The Supreme Sports Council (CSD) specified in its statement that the support will serve to “strengthen the Spanish candidacy through activities such as holding meetings and events in different parts of the national and foreign territory.”

It will allow the establishment of a “technical office for the coordination of events”, as well as, among other things, “the development of the necessary infrastructures for training centers and the modernization of national and regional teams.”

“We are sure of the quality of our candidacy, and therefore we also support this project with this financial contribution,” said Rodriguez.

He added that Spain, Portugal and Ukraine “are ready to fight for this candidacy to host this competition that represents not only a message of commitment to sport but also a message of peace.”

Spain and Portugal officially submitted their joint bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup on 5 June 2021 ahead of a friendly match between the two teams at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.
