The United Nations condemns the attempted assassination of Cristina Fernandez

United Nations, September 2 (EFE): The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, on Friday condemned the attempted assassination of Argentine Vice President Cristina Fernandez yesterday, and was “shocked” by this event.

The Secretary-General is shocked by the news. “She condemns the violence and expresses her solidarity with the vice president, the government and the Argentine people,” spokeswoman Eri Caneco said when asked about this during a press conference.

The Argentine Federal Police arrested, on Thursday evening, a man who pointed his gun to the head of the Vice President when she was at the gates of her apartment in the Recoleta neighborhood of the capital, surrounded by Kirchneren gunmen.

The country’s president, Alberto Fernandez, reported that the gun had five bullets in it, and that for a reason not yet confirmed, he did not fire even though the man pulled the trigger.

Local television channels showed a man pointing to the vice president, who immediately crouched among her escorts.

The incident is part of a climate of strong political tension in Argentina, after the public prosecutor on August 22 requested a 12-year prison sentence for Cristina Fernandez.

The petition was lodged in the oral trial that the former president is also facing for alleged wrongdoing in awarding public works during her government (2007-2015).
