Several international humanitarian organizations today criticized the inability of the UN Security Council to issue a resolution demanding a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

“We are dismayed that this body has not authorized a ruling on this issue,” the groups said in a joint statement issued here.

They pointed out that if this is approved, it will provide much-needed relief to civilians in that area who are subjected to continuous Israeli bombing.

The letter, signed by organizations including CARE International, Save the Children, Oxfam and the Norwegian Refugee Council, said this was a missed opportunity to stop the violence.

“Two months have passed since the crisis and total siege of Gaza, which is currently the deadliest place for civilians in the world. They stressed that no place is safe.

In this sense, they condemned the inability of humanitarian workers to work effectively and safely due to Israeli bombing and attacks against the entire coastal strip.

They noted that incoming aid supplies are severely constrained and do not represent even a small fraction of what is needed.

“People cannot get food or water, the health system has collapsed, and attacks on hospitals have left a large portion of Gaza’s population without access to any treatment,” they lamented.

They criticized, referring to the United States, which rejected the project yesterday, that it is unjustified for Security Council members to veto a resolution calling for an end to the fighting while the humanitarian arguments in favor of a ceasefire are very clear.
