DETROIT — Victor Reyes and Riley Greene hit back-to-back home runs in the ninth inning as the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 4-3 on Saturday.
With one exit at the ninth, Reyes tied the match against Royals loyal Joel Payamps (2-2). They were the first home-run Payamps allowed in 26 1/3 innings this season. Green followed him with the first home run of his career.
The Tigers’ (3-0) assistant Joe Jimenez made a perfect ninth inning and took the win after the Detroit shooters retired on the last 17 hits they faced.
The Royals took a 2-0 lead over the rules-laden Hunter Dozier double in the first half. Greene led the bottom of that turn with a 3-pointer and scored on the sacrifice fly for Javy Baez.
Kansas City moved up 3-1 to fourth on White Merryfield’s RBI single.
The Tigers scored in the fifth inning of Greene’s career, reaching the third goal in Miguel Cabrera’s song and scoring with a kick from Eric Haas.
For the royal family, Venezuelan Eduard Olivares scored 3-0 in one game.
For the Tigres, the Puerto Rican Paez 3-0 with the RBI, Willy Castro 4-1. Venezuelans Cabrera 3-1 and Victor Reyes 3-2 with one inning and RBI record.
