UN Secretary-General calls for recovery in Lebanon

UN Secretary-General calls for recovery in Lebanon

The day before, at the conclusion of his three-day official visit to that country, the highest representative of the United Nations stressed that concrete solutions and actions were urgently needed to boost recovery.

According to the official UN news website, Guterres called for people’s demands for more prosperity, responsibility, protection and transparency to be met, in order to restore hope for a better future.

He stressed that the Lebanese political leaders must bear the responsibility they bear towards their people, and the people hope that they will listen to their needs and restore the economy.

In addition, there is an urgent need for an effective government, which has strong state institutions and effectively fights corruption, the prime minister said at a press conference in Beirut before his departure.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations stressed that “the Lebanese leaders do not have the right to divide and paralyze the country,” stressing the suffering of this population.

It also chose to increase the involvement of civil society, women and youth in decision-making and policy-making.

The President of the Republic believes that the parliamentary elections scheduled for May 2022 may be a great opportunity for the Lebanese people to make their voice heard, and the government respects this cry.

And regarding the violations of land, water and airspace committed by Israel on the Blue Line, which violate UN Security Council Resolution 1701, Guterres stressed that they are “unacceptable.”

In this sense, he alluded to the origin of the problem and once again expressed the commitment of the United Nations to a two-state solution, Palestine and Israel, and of course ensuring respect for Lebanon’s unity.

Referring to his visit to the port of Beirut, the Portuguese diplomat expressed solidarity with the Lebanese people and stressed the need for an impartial, thorough and transparent investigation into the bombings that took place there in August 2020.

According to the data of the United Nations, the effects of this disaster on the economy have caused great destruction and Lebanon continues to suffer from an economic and financial crisis, causing more and more people to need humanitarian assistance.
