Urge to prevent diabetes from the primary health level

With the aim of reducing the incidence of diabetes to a minimum and ensuring a better quality of life for patients, specialists urge the promotion of prevention and early diagnosis of the disease at the primary health level in Santiago de Cuba.

According to what Dania Cardona, director of the Diabetes Care Center located in this city, told the Cuban News Agency, the condition of the majority of the arrivals to the institution is worrying, because the severe physical deterioration indicates a delay in detection due to irregularity. He highlighted the continuous monitoring of women with diabetes during pregnancy, to avoid complications during childbirth and the future development of the disease in the infant, while calling for strengthening monitoring and control measures for these patients.

Noelvis Barroso, a nutritionist, described holding periodic talks in communities about healthy eating habits as crucial, and stressed the necessary follow-up, by doctors, of each patient’s diet according to his body weight.

He explained that people sometimes consume natural medicinal substances, fruits, food and other products at inappropriate times and proportions, hence the educational role of family doctors and nurses.

Diabetes is among the leading causes of death from chronic non-communicable diseases inside and outside Cuba, hence the importance of following a proper diet, optimal lifestyles and avoiding a sedentary lifestyle.
