Newark Airport Flights Delayed After Equipment Outage, FAA Says

Must Read

Flights arriving at and departing from Newark Liberty International Airport faced delays Monday after an equipment outage affected air traffic control operations, prompting the Federal Aviation Administration to temporarily halt inbound flights.

The disruption also affected Philadelphia International Airport and Teterboro Airport as federal aviation officials responded to problems involving radio frequencies used by air traffic controllers.

FAA Orders Ground Stop at Newark Liberty International Airport

The FAA ordered a ground stop at Newark Liberty International Airport at about 10 a.m. Monday. The restriction was expected to remain in effect until at least 12:45 p.m.

A ground stop is an air traffic management measure that keeps aircraft scheduled for a particular destination at their departure airports. The procedure is commonly used to manage disruptions caused by weather, equipment problems or other conditions that can affect the safe and orderly flow of air traffic.

The FAA said the latest disruption was linked to technical issues affecting communications at Philadelphia TRACON, an air traffic control facility responsible for managing aircraft operating in the region.

“The FAA is pausing flights into Philadelphia International, Teterboro and Newark Liberty International airports due to issues with some frequencies at Philadelphia TRACON,” a spokesperson said.

Philadelphia TRACON Frequency Issues Affect Regional Flights

TRACON stands for Terminal Radar Approach Control. These facilities use radar and radio communications to direct aircraft as they approach or depart busy airports.

Because controllers depend on reliable communications to coordinate aircraft movements, problems involving radio frequencies can lead the FAA to restrict traffic while technical teams investigate and address the issue.

Newark Liberty, one of the major airports serving the New York City metropolitan area, handles a significant volume of domestic and international traffic. Disruptions there can affect passengers well beyond the region as delayed aircraft and crews move through airline networks.

Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, which primarily handles private and corporate aviation, was also included in the FAA’s temporary flight restrictions. Philadelphia International Airport, a major commercial hub serving the Philadelphia region, was affected as well.

Cause of Equipment Outage Not Disclosed

Officials did not immediately provide details about what caused the equipment outage or the specific frequencies affected at Philadelphia TRACON.

The extent of the delays was also expected to vary by airline, route and departure airport as air traffic operations adjusted to the restrictions.

Passengers Advised to Check Flight Status

Travelers scheduled to fly through Newark Liberty International Airport were encouraged to check directly with their airlines for the latest information on individual flights.

Passengers flying through Philadelphia International or using Teterboro Airport were also advised to monitor flight information as aviation officials worked to resolve the communications problems.

Air traffic restrictions can continue to affect schedules even after a ground stop is lifted, particularly at heavily traveled airports where delayed departures and arrivals must be worked back into the normal flight schedule.

The FAA had not released additional information about the cause of the outage. Travelers were advised to continue monitoring their flight status as normal operations resumed.
