On Thursday (09.30.2021) the Colombian government presented a roadmap for hydrogen development as part of the energy transition, an initiative funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

“We have set ourselves the task of getting the first green hydrogen pilots in 2022 and the blue hydrogen pilots as soon as possible, because this is the mission of a country that makes the energy transition one of its major revolutions,” the president said. The goal is to develop, generate and use hydrogen as a “clean energy”, which will complete the country’s transition to renewable energy, both conventional and unconventional.

The idea aims to achieve that between now and 2030, the tons of CO2 emitted are reduced between 2.5 and 3 million and investments of between 2500 and 5550 million dollars are attracted.

It also aims to create 7,000 to 15,000 jobs, as well as generate one to three gigawatts of green hydrogen electrolysis and produce 50 units of blue hydrogen energy annually.

“Decarbonizing” industry and transportation

The Colombian government considers this initiative a business opportunity, as the development of the hydrogen roadmap will allow “decarbonization” of sectors such as industry, transport and agriculture.

Along these lines, this market has prospects for developing new technologies and exponential growth, as well as providing tools so that Colombia can tap into the potential of wind and solar.

It also has great export potential in the medium and long term, which will allow the country to access Asian, European and North American markets.

“In 2021, we will conclude the year by hitting more than 20 times the installed capacity of unconventional renewable energy that we found in 2018 thanks to the commissioning of about 16 projects, including the first wind farm to be built in more than 17 years.”
