A loser in the Nigerian elections announces his impeachment

The elections were neither transparent nor fair, said the vice-presidential candidate for the Liberal Party, Yusuf Dati Baba Ahmed, who spoke of cases of intimidation against voters and asserted that the consultation took place in violation of the terms of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CNEI).

“Our position is that the results do not meet minimum standards for a transparent, free and fair election, and we will challenge it in court,” said the spokesman for the Liberal Party, which placed presidential candidate Peter Obi in third place with more than six million votes.

After the first complaints about the conduct of the elections penned by HDP candidate Atiku Abubakar, he urged the defeated winner to bring their allegations to justice, and to avoid street unrest.

The allegations have fallen on deaf ears since the head of the Independent Electoral Commission, Mahmoud Yacoubou, confirmed that voting took place in accordance with the law and that recorded lapses in the counting and transmission of votes were few.

In any case, last Saturday’s elections, from which members of Parliament were also knocked out, was the first in Nigeria’s history that the winner did not win a majority of votes.
