Los Angeles (AFP) – American Jennifer Kupshaw controlled her nerves and won the Chevron Championship on Sunday, her first women’s golf Grand Slam tournament in 2022 and also her first on the LPGA Tour.

Kupcho, 24, a native of Colorado, closed in with a 74 (+2) stroke at Mission Hills Field, in the California desert to finish with a cumulative score of 274 (-14), two times short of his own. Her compatriot Jessica Korda, who made a 69 (-3) card on Sunday for a total of 276 (-12).

Slovenian youthful Pia Babnik, 18, finished third after closing in 66 (-6) to finish with a score of 277 (-11).

Japan’s Hinako Shibuno, French Céline Poitier, American star Lexi Thompson and 2021 champion from Thailand Patty Tavatanakit ranked fourth with a score of 278 (-10).

Kupcho celebrated his victory by jumping the traditional winner into “Poppie’s Pond,” the watery menace that surrounds the 18th green at Mission Hills Country Club.

The former world number one as an amateur, who turned professional ahead of the 2019 season, is now the latest Chevron Championship winner at her home in California.

The championship will move to Texas in 2023 after more than half a century at the Rancho Mirage location.

The win confirms that Kupcho is one of the most talented players and comes just three years after winning the Augusta Women’s Amateur title in 2019.

Kupcho, who painted her nails green in honor of the Augusta National in the final round on Sunday, admitted she doesn’t expect her first LPGA title to be a major.

“I’ve been close to that a few times, it’s been really hard sometimes, but here I am,” Kupshaw said.
