Arnar Hrafn: “The large number of women in the VALORANT community makes us very happy”

I love games whether I play them or make them. I am passionate about creating a good player experience. This is how he presents himself on LinkedIn Arnar Hrafn, VALORANT Production Manager, Riot Games FPS.

he is, Together with his group of workers led by L and Anna Donlon, who are responsible for making the game continue and evolve As it is at the moment. Marca had the opportunity to talk to him about the evolution of the game and the future of the title at the Copenhagen Masters.

What do you think of Pearl’s reception by society?

I think it was good, and I think they enjoyed it. I think every new map we make challenges players to play the game in a different way. All the maps we put take some time for players to get used to, understand how to play them, etc. I feel the truth with Pearl is that at the moment they understand how the map works, they are having a good time and have loved its aesthetics.

What would you like to explore on the following maps? Is there something they say: “Oh, well, we haven’t tried this at the moment…”?

I can’t go into details, of course, but I can say that in general we have a lot of ideas about what kind of features we want players to deal with in the next few maps, how to fix issues that come up when we’re playing against another team, and how to play them strategically as a team.. We are constantly trying new things, testing prototypes, and deciding what kind of scenario to follow. Let’s hope it’s as amazing as Perl.

Apart from the maps, you also have the proxies. Do you think the pace of new customers coming into the game will continue as it has been so far? Are they going to bring out a new agent in the next few months? We heard something about a project called “Mage”…

I have no idea what you’re talking about (laughs). Similar to the maps, we have a lot of ideas about the new agents we can create, the new tools they can introduce to the game, and how players can manage their playing style with these agents… but in terms of rhythm, something we have to watch more if we think that The game can be easily understood and played easily by new players, if it is very difficult to learn old agents and you have to learn new agents in the fore… For this reason, I probably don’t keep the same pace forever when it comes to including new agents, but during the few years coming.

Could there ever come a time, by including new agents, who delete others from the game to keep the same number?

It doesn’t require keeping the same number of agents, but thinking about whether players can adapt to the number of agents we have and the pace of creation. Serving too many agents at the same time creates chaos, like “What’s going on in my game?” Sometimes it happens with new agents, and you don’t know them and wonder what they’re doing, or, there are five new maps and I have to play them all and learn them at the same time. You can’t do that and maintain the high competitive level we’re striving for, so having a specific character speed and agent introductions is just for players to have time to fully understand everything in the game.

There is a large portion of the VALORANT community being female, which is not often the case in League of Legends, why do you think this happens?

What we saw in VALORANT is that yes, it is more accessible to all kinds of players, those who come from other games, of different ages, as well as women. I’m very happy with that, because women are such a big part of this world, and I know they play video games just like men, so being able to create a game that they love and encourage them to play is a very important thing for us. What makes this happen in VALORANT? I don’t know. I think VALORANT, for any kind of person, not just women, it’s fun, energetic, and makes you happy to play it. I don’t feel sad, its dark to me, the game looks very colorful, and I think that makes people want to be a part of it, to sit down and play something they enjoy.

The last question. Do you think we’ll be able to see an event in VALORANT like LoL’s Shattered King event in the future, to learn more about the character lore?

Showing the story from within VALORANT, and making it look in-game and discoverable is something we like to do more than we do. We have more ambitions than abilities at the moment, but these abilities are something we are creating, so I hope the players will look forward to them and can wait patiently for these big events, because it is something we are definitely happy to do.
