CELAC Foreign Ministers discuss the diplomatic crisis between Mexico and Ecuador – Juventud Rebelde

CELAC Foreign Ministers discuss the diplomatic crisis between Mexico and Ecuador – Juventud Rebelde

Tegucigalpa, April 9 – The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) will hold another virtual meeting on Tuesday with the organization's foreign ministers on issues related to the diplomatic crisis between Ecuador and Mexico.

The regional body is temporarily headed by Honduran President Xiomara Castro, and will seek to take action after Ecuadorian security forces recently stormed the Mexican embassy in Quito to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas, Prensa Latina reported.

Due to the lack of respect for the agreements that stipulate the inviolability of diplomatic headquarters and recognize the right to asylum, Castro calls for a summit of presidents scheduled to be held on April 12.

The call includes asking the Ecuadorian government to correct the events that occurred in flagrant violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the Caracas Convention on Asylum, as well as to redirect the appropriate procedure for the aforementioned regulations in the case of the request submitted by former Vice President Glass.

As a representative of Mexico, Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena formalized the founding procedure before the International Court in The Hague and championed the support of her fellow CELAC countries. In addition, she sent a letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, which was presented to the court. The United Nations, the Human Rights Council and the General Assembly.

In this sense, Celak encourages dialogue as an opportunity to restore diplomatic relations between Mexico and Ecuador and, if this is not possible, to take political positions either jointly, bilaterally or in multilateral organizations to ensure full compliance.

Citizen Revolution demands information from Noboa about Ghala

Prensa Latina also reported that Luisa Gonzalez, head of Ecuador's Citizens' Revolution Movement, on Tuesday asked the country's government for information about the health of former Vice President Jorge Glas.

Gonzalez reported on Teleamazonas that Glass is in the hospital and they do not allow him to see his children or his lawyers, which violates his human rights.

The RC president said that Glass was granted asylum at the Mexican embassy and was forcibly deported to Ecuadorian territory.

The former Vice President's lawyer, Sonia Vera, warned on social media that Glass remains isolated after suffering a critical “drug overdose”, deprived of contact with his family and lawyer, and that President Daniel Noboa will personally bear the brunt of this measure.

The International Court of Justice can punish Ecuador after the attack on the Mexican embassy in the capital, which is why more and more countries and organizations are rejecting it.

The raid on the Mexican diplomatic headquarters on the night of Friday, April 5, which led to Glass's arrest, sparked international condemnation, but the Ecuadorian government still insists it was justified.

The Ecuadorian government asserts that there is a risk of flight for Glass, who had an arrest warrant pending pending judicial proceedings, but had already obtained asylum from Mexico.

It's not about Glass, they can hate him or protect him, but storming the Mexican embassy with soldiers and police is ridiculous madness, which was denounced on his social network by political analyst Mauro Andino, who considers that the international agreements and documents concluded by Ecuador must be respected.

Glass, considered one of the symbols of Ecuador's “war of the law”, was provisionally released on November 28, 2022, after combining two prison sentences of six and eight years; However, the appeal was cancelled.

Earlier this year, the judiciary ordered the imprisonment of a former official on suspicion of embezzlement in a case called Manabi Reconstruction, which investigates alleged embezzlement in public works after the 2016 earthquake.
