The new presidential spokesman said it was “despicable to politicize human health” in response to Representative Aldo Davila’s request to set up a commission to determine the case of Alejandro Giamatti. Of course we understand that the spokesperson for the presidency has no idea what the ruler’s physical or mental condition means for the institutional framework in terms of his ability to exercise the corresponding functions, but it is clear that his health is a national matter. Attention because we are not talking about an aspect of private life, but about the impact of any disease on public function.

People’s private lives must certainly be respected, but when it comes to the public official, there are issues that go beyond this area because what is happening or may happen has profound implications for the country. The lack of correct and accurate information about the condition of Alejandro Giamatti gives rise to many speculations, as can be seen on social networks, and they may or may not be false. The only way to know the reality is through the responsible position of the Presidency of the Republic itself to inform the citizens, so that no one can take advantage of some kind of inability to do their own thing.

The present quarrel between the President and the Vice-President is public and notorious, a reason which makes the situation all the more complex and delicate because, under normal circumstances, it would simply be known that in the event of any limitation to the normal performance of the functions of the Head of State, the procedures laid down in the Constitution would be observed , while the temporary disability is resolved. What is not worth it is that some kind of “de facto authority” assumes this role without the citizens being aware of what might happen.

Transparency is necessary and demanded does not politicize human health. If the spokesperson gets sick, he can keep the secret and no one will complain, but when the president of the republic is sick, the same thing does not happen because he is not just a fool but the person in charge of running the country and that changes the situation. The subject, of course, is a national interest and cannot be dealt with in proportion to the client.

We hope that the president will recover from the disease that recently took him to the hospital and that he will not be seriously ill, but transparency in dealing with this information is essential.
