Cuba mourns the death of migrants in a traffic accident in Mexico

HAVANA, May 28 (EFE) – Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez expressed his regret on Saturday over the traffic accident that occurred three days ago in Zacatecas, Mexico, in which many migrants – including Cubans – who tried to reach the United States died.

“My deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims. Cuba affirms its commitment to safe migration,” the Cuban foreign minister wrote on Twitter.

Mexico’s National Institute of Migration reported that the accident occurred Wednesday morning when a passenger bus carrying dozens of migrants overturned in Mexquitic de Carmona, on the highway from San Luis Potosi to Zacatecas.

Last March, the Cuban embassy in the North American country reported that three citizens lost their lives in another traffic accident in the southern state of Veracruz.

Cuba blames the United States for these irregular migration flows by saying that Washington is not complying with bilateral obligations, for which it should grant 20,000 visas annually.

The island is witnessing a mass exodus linked primarily – according to many analysts – to the serious economic crisis that the country is going through.

The combination of the epidemic, the tightening of US sanctions and errors in macroeconomic management led to famine, partial dollarization of the economy and high inflation.

Data from the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) shows that more than 32,000 Cubans were arrested when entering that country’s borders in March.

CBP recorded 9,827 Cubans arriving during January, and in February the number rose to 16,550. EFE
