Havana, January 25 (EFE). – The Cuban Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) reported this Tuesday that it had recorded 2,764 new positive results for covid-19 in the past 24 hours in addition to 6 deaths linked to the disease.

The number of new infections has remained relatively stable for several days, after a marked increase in the first half of January. The numbers of critically ill patients and deaths are beginning to rise, although they are still low.

Thus, the country has accumulated 8,373 deaths and 1028,183 cases of coronavirus since the first case reported on the island in March 2020.

There are currently 16,506 active cases, of which 43 are serious and 20 are critical.

The eastern province of Holguín recorded the largest number of new infections, with 441 cases, followed by the central province of Ciego de Avila, with 241 cases.

Cuban Minister of Public Health, José Angel Portal Miranda, stressed on Monday that the high level of vaccination in his country is not enough to defeat the epidemic, and demanded that we not lower our guard in protection.

The vaccination rate – the third highest in the world, according to a compilation by Our World in Data – is a “great force,” but vaccines alone “can’t do all the work.” “Protecting ourselves is still essential,” he stressed.

Experts advising the Ministry of Public Health consider that Cuba is going through a new wave of the epidemic associated with the spread of the omicron variant, which is already estimated to be widespread on the island.

They think regrowth may have already peaked, but that infection numbers will take a few weeks to start dropping.

The largest wave the country has experienced occurred between July and August of last year, with more than 9,000 cases per day for several weeks and nearly a hundred deaths per day.

Health authorities confirm that nearly 88% of the population of 11.2 million people have so far received the three doses that constitute the guideline for one of the three vaccines developed in Cuba against the Corona virus.

In addition, about 4.8 million people have already received the booster dose.

Cuba is not part of the Covax mechanism established by the World Health Organization (WHO) for low-income countries to obtain vaccines. Nor did he buy it from the international market. EFE
