Dirty far-right campaign in Chile

Next Sunday, the Palacio de La Moneda’s far-right candidate, José Antonio Caste, and the banner-holder of the Left Coalition, I Approve Dignity, Gabriel Boric, will be measured at the polls.

In response to a question from Prensa Latina about this, the analyst and director of El Siglo newspaper, Hugo Guzmán, explained that this phenomenon occurred not only in Chile, but also in other Latin American countries such as Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina.

“Here in Chile, the extreme right is using lies, half-truths, media terrorism, distorting communications and changing reality to impose a message that has an impact on sectors of society,” he said.

Guzmán made particular reference to Kast’s attacks on Boric when he tried in radio and television debates to demonize his opponent.

The conservative candidate used most of his interference to try to disqualify his rival, accusing him of changing his initial positions on various issues, sexual assault and even publicly summoning him for a drug test.

“I think José Antonio Caste crossed a line that I don’t know if he’s conscious. That’s really getting into the mud, it’s a dirty campaign,” said sociologist, analyst and director of Tú Influyes, Axel Callis.

Many experts lamented that these pre-election meetings allocate more time to personal attacks between candidates than to explaining government programs.

The journalist, who holds a PhD in linguistics from New York University, said, “The far right not only uses fake news with sufficient accuracy at election time, but generally when it sees that there is an increase in transformative forces.”

Speaking to Radio Universidad de Chile, Santander added that all this goes hand in hand with the creation of new digital media dedicated to the development of these contents.

For senator and journalist Alejandro Guilier, “Kast is primarily focused on increasing people’s fears through fake news.”

“He’s accusing someone and then making it relative and apologizing, but that’s already on the network and all these people are coming to fix the problem,” he explained.

The former president of the College of Journalists also denounced that the far-right standard-bearer went to the United States to coordinate the second round of elections and find out how they would face it, because his campaign is not directed by Chile. but from the outside.
